Republican Madness

Michael Steele may be the head of the Republican National Committee but you wouldn't know it with the way that so many Republicans (including Steele) have taken upon themselves to kowtow to radio pundit Rush Limbaugh.

The Secret Republican Apology Machine

Open Letter to Republican Traitors (From a Former Republican)

It's weird to see a major political party kowtow to some loud-mouth pundit who has dissed drug abusers (while being addicted to Oxycontin himself) and praised the institution of marriage (while he went through three marriages and divorces) and once made fun of Michael J. Fox's Parkinson's disease. At times I gloat because I've been a registered Democrat for many years.

However, the day that the Democratic Party starts looking to people like Keith Olbermann or Randi Rhodes as the de-facto leader of that party will be the day that I re-register as an Independent. Because any political party that kowtows to any political pundit is a party that is not only totally pathetic but has run completely out of ideas and I don't want to be associated with that.

You Know the Banks Have Fucked Up With the Government Bailout...

...when even a celebrity gossip site like TMZ.com is devoting a post to this. TMZ has exposed how Northern Trust spent $1.6 billion in government bailout money on all sorts of stuff like a fabulous cocktail party at the Lowes Santa Monica Beach Hotel and a special clients and employees-only concert performed by Chicago.

This went on despite the fact that Northern Trust laid off 450 workers (4 percent of its workforce) last December.

And people have been getting outraged over Nadya Suleman giving birth to octuplets even though she's unemployed, collecting disability payments, living with her parents, and is already the mother of six other children. While it's possible that Nadya Suleman may be gaming the system and getting access to California taxpayers' money that she has no right to get, the money she has earned is nothing compared with how Northern Trust has squandered a whopping $1.6 billion in taxpayers' money. And Northern Trust is not the only institution who have misused bailout money like that. Personally I think people should focus their anger on the banks and Wall Street firms who are spending taxpayers' money on expensive vacations, luxury goods, and buying out smaller banks instead of Nadya Suleman.

First Octuplets, Now Quadruplets

Un-fucking-believable!!!

http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/OnCall/story?id=6871395&page=1

The fertility doctor who helped Nadya Suleman conceive her octuplets also treated a 49-year-old woman who is carrying quadruplets, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Dr. Michael Kamrava transferred at least seven embryos to the unnamed woman, who is hospitalized at Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center, the Times reported today.

Like Suleman, the woman has been placed on bedrest because of discomfort and to protect the unborn children.

The woman, who is reportedly 20 weeks pregnant, has three other children but was hoping to have one more, according to the Times.

Meanwhile, the California Medical Board is reportedly investigating Kamrava for violating guidelines by implanting too many embryos in women and using unconventional in-vitro fertilization techniques.

This guy needs to be stopped. To implant so many embryos at once in a woman is very risky and dangerous to both the mother and babies. He is way too reckless with his treatments to continue practicing medicine. Women are not dogs and cats!!! The human uterus is NOT designed to handle large litters like that!!!

A Total Disgrace!!!

I was doing some random web surfing when I stumbled upon this charmer of a story about the preparations for Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe's 85th birthday party.

http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/article2224049.ece?OTC-RSS&ATTR=News

TYRANT Robert Mugabe sparked outrage last night after lavishing himself with a champagne-fuelled lobster celebration for his 85th birthday.

The evil dictator has ordered 2,000 bottles of vintage bubbly, 8,000 lobsters, 4,000 portion of caviar as millions of his own people starve.

He has indulged himself with 8,000 boxes of Ferrero Rocher chocolates, 500 bottles of Johnny Walker whisky, 100 kilos of prawns and 3,000 ducks.

And he has demanded international supporters send him cash gifts of around £25,000 to celebrate.

Last night there was fury at the Zimbabwean leader's party arrangements.

Seven million of his own citizens rely on food aid to survive.

Robert Mugabe was once hailed as a hero for freeing his nation from British colonial rule but he has since been proven to be an incredibly nasty tyrant who's willing to hold power at all costs--no matter how much it affects his nation or his people. Unlike, let's say, Josef Stalin (who was organized enough to make the trains in the Soviet Union run on time despite sending numerous people to the gulags), Mugabe has mismanaged everything to the point where there is hyperinflation so bad that prices of various goods can double and triple within a few hours after going on sale and people are dying of preventable diseases like cholera.

The people of Zimbabwe can be forgiven for executing this guy once they've succeeded in overthrowing him.

Single Unemployed Mother + Fertility Clinic = Four Children + Twins + Octuplets = AN INSANE TRIP TO THE POORHOUSE!!!

There were two stories that dominated the mainstream media this week: President Obama's proposed economic stimulus package and a mother who gave birth to octuplets. At first I ignored the latter story other than mentioning to my husband about the time when I was a teenager that my family adopted someone who was an octuplet. We named him Napoleon and I loved and treated him like a brother. There was no media attention to Napoleon--no television interviews, no newspaper stories, no Internet stories and sites about him. The main reason why the news media never pursued a story about the circumstances surrounding the births of Napoleon and his biological siblings: Napoleon was a dog.

The media initially covered the octuplet story as a wonderful heartwarming tale of survival against all odds and there was even some admiration expressed for the mother's determination to go through with the pregnancy of all eight babies despite the doctor's advice that she undergo selective abortion.

But then the shit hit the fan when the news media learned more about the octuplets' mother. Her name is Nadya Suleman, she is 33 years old, she has no job, she currently lives with her parents in their home, and she was separated from her husband in 2000 (with the divorce being finalized in 2008). In addition, she is already the mother of six other children, including a set of two-year-old twins and a three-year-old with autism. All of her children, including the octuplets were the result of fertility treatments with the same fertility clinic. Suleman's ex-husband is not the father of any of her children. The biological father of all of her children is named David Soloman and he's been described as "one of her admirers".

If all that wasn't enough, Suleman's parents had filed for bankruptcy and abandoned a previous home a little over a year-and-a-half ago and Suleman's father, a former Iraqi military man, is in the process of heading back to his native Iraq to earn money to help support his grandchildren.

Despite the criticism regarding Suleman's choices, there are media outlets who are swarming Suleman with book and TV offers for her story. There are even reports that Suleman has already put a price tag on this: $2 million.

So far Suleman has spoken to NBC's Ann Curry. A video excerpt of that interview has surfaced and the rest of the story will be aired next week on both the Today Show and Dateline. In the video, Suleman defends her actions. She said that people are paying attention to her because she took risks and she made a decision to live an unconventional lifestyle. She also said that she intends to resume her college studies in order to get her master's degree and she will be able to provide for her children. She emphasizes that she is full of determination to succeed.

Okay, it's obvious from the video that Suleman is idealistic and naive at best and totally delusional at worst. While the whole interview hasn't surfaced yet, I only hope Ann Curry asked something like this to Suleman: "You say that you want to finish your education and get a master's degree. You are also 33 years old and already the mother of six children. You are still in your prime childbearing years. Hasn't it occurred to you to wait until after you get your degree before you decided to have more children?"

The fact that Suleman is expecting to go back to college and resume her studies while being unemployed, single, and dealing with 14 children reveals her to be living in a totally fantasy dream world. Granted, Suleman has received $168,000 for state disability payments for an on-the-job back injury nearly 10 years ago but that's not enough to pay for everything. Unless she has somehow wrangled a full scholarship, she's going to have to deal with tuition, books, school supplies, and other related expenses.

Even if she has a full scholarship, she is going to have to deal with arranging child care for all those children while she's in class and while she has to take time out to do homework and studying.

And then there is the one autistic child to deal with. For years I've heard plenty of how having one autistic child can tax the patience and resources of the most dedicated parents. I've known teachers who've had students with Asperger's (which is a more mild form of autism) who said that they were a challenge to deal with because they have a tendency to disrupt an entire class. How on earth can Suleman deal with an autistic child and a set of octuplets is beyond me.

Okay, so it seems like Suleman has problems with facing reality. But, if it weren't for enablers, her fantasy of obtaining a large family through a fertility clinic would've remained just a fantasy.

David Solomon: The biological father of all of Suleman's children hasn't spoken publicly about this yet. He could've refused to take part in all of this in the first place. Heck, even after Suleman had her first few children, he could've said "That's enough! I'm not donating any more sperm!" But, no, he kept on jerking off without even realizing the consequences of his actions.

The fertility clinic: Suleman had used the same clinic for all of her children. You'd think that after a while the doctors at that clinic would've advised her to consider not having any more children after a while. You'd think they would warn her about the consequences of continuing to get pregnant over and over again. But they didn't seem to do anything like that. In addition, they implanted a whopping six embryos inside of her (two of them split soon afterwards, which brought up the fetus total to eight) while most national fertility clinic guidelines advocate implanting no more than two at a time. I've recently heard that the authorities in California is investigating that fertility clinic and I hope everyone involved in this incident is made to pay for this because there is really no excuse for this.

Suleman's parents: Suleman has been living with her parents while she was busy giving birth to baby after baby. Despite their past financial problems, it's apparent they didn't put their foot down and tell her after she had the third or fourth child that this is as many children that they can handle under their roof. They could've told her that if she wanted to have any more children she should get a job and move out into her own place. If she complained, they could've told her that it's their home and she needed to abide by their rules if she wished to live with them. But it seemed like they didn't do that. They basically stepped aside and let their daughter have her way.

If Suleman had been pressured into getting a job and moving into her own place, she would've had to confront the reality of raising children on her own. Perhaps she would've seen the light and decide against revisiting the fertility clinic over and over again.

The mainstream news media: For years the media has hyped multiple births, especially the television networks. I can remember when they tracked the first few years of the Dilley sextuplets (who were the first surviving sextuplets born in the United States) two or three times a year (usually during a ratings sweeps period). Then when the McCaughey septuplets were born, the media promptly forgot the Dilley children and focused on the newer babies since they were the first surviving septuplets.

All of the stories revolved around how it was a miracle that all of these children survived and they focused on the cute and humorous side of raising so many children at one time. Sure the news media may occasionally mention the health risks facing children who are part of a multiple birth but they tend to emphasize the positive and funny side of all those children.

In the last few years the media has moved beyond the occasional feature news stories highlighting the growing up years of a multiple and have now produced a weekly cable television series about multiples. Jon & Kate Plus Eight is a reality TV show about a couple who wanted a family but had fertility problems. They went to a fertility clinic where they succeeded in having a set of twins. A few years later, the couple decided that they wanted to have a third child so they went back to the fertility clinic. In an illustration of the old saying "Be careful of what you wish for..." they were even more successful than the first time around: They had a set of sextuplets.

The show is the biggest hit for TLC and the entire family have become celebrities. They have received money, clothes, expensive vacations, furniture, food, toys, and even a larger house. The show has also created controversy, which is well documented in the unofficial blogs Gosselins Without Pity and Truth Breeds Hatred (the latter was started by an associate of Jon and Kate's sister-in-law who was a regular guest on the series during its early days until she began to express her concerns about the children's well-being to their parents and the show's producers--she was subsequently thrown off the series and is no longer allowed to visit the children).

With all of this focus on the good side of large multiple births and the material rewards and freebies that the parents received it's no wonder that a less-than-mentally stable person like Nadya Suleman gets the idea that having a multiple birth could the key to public attention and prosperity. If she gets what she wants, then she could provide an unfortunate example to another mentally unstable woman who gets the idea of having a large group of multiples is a totally cool idea. Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if some disturbed woman is thinking about trying for octuplets of her own. Or maybe going further by trying for producing nonuplets, decaplets, undecaplets, or even duodecaplets.

It's too late to do anything about the Suleman octuplets since they are already here. But the news media and the federal government can do something to prevent any more such births from happening. The federal government can pass a law requiring fertility clinics to limit all embryonic implants to no more than two at a time. Any clinic caught violating the law will be required to completely provide financial support for any large multiples they created.

We also need to call on the news media to stop glorifying such large multiple births. As long as they continue to profit from this, they will continue to produce stories on the heartwarming side of having multiples. We the public need to start boycotting any and all such stories. We need to stop watching series like Jon and Kate Plus Eight and start sending e-mails and letters to the editor emphasizing the downside of large multiples and express scorn to the media for glorifying such stories.

We need to keep in mind that when it comes to multiples and the frequent health problems they produce, the children are the ones who tend to suffer the most.

Bye-Bye, Blago

Illinois Senate ousts Blagojevich

Yep, it really happened despite the fact that Blago has been on nearly every single television talk show and news outlets this week except for The Dr. Phil Show talking about how he's innocent and how he did everything for the people of Illinois--especially the poor and disenfranchised. He's made so many appearances that Keith Olbermann aired an edited version of his many appearances where he essentially said the same thing and hit the same talking points.

I only saw one of his interviews in full when he appeared on The Rachel Maddow Show on MSNBC. He kept on saying that he only cared about the poor, such as signing bills enabling poor women to get mammograms and obtain treatment for breast cancer and how he considered nominating Oprah Winfrey for Barack Obama's vacant Senate seat.

What was amusing was the fact that after airing the long version of his interview, Rachel Maddow went back and aired some portions of the interview where she felt that he incriminated himself.

There's a reason why most lawyers in high profile court cases tend to advise their clients not to talk to the media until after the court case has ended. You have to be extremely disciplined to not accidentally incriminate yourself during the course of an interview. I wouldn't be surprised if Patrick Fitzgerald has recorded all of Blago's television appearances and is currently getting his staff to pour over everything Blago has said in order to help the prosecution for his upcoming criminal trial.

Hell, I think he should be sending flowers to Rachel Maddow after the case ends to thank her for making his job so easy with the above video clip.

I'll admit that Blago came across as charming in Maddow's interview and the other clips of his appearances. But even if one believes his contention that he's done the things he's done to help the poor and downtrodden in his state, here's are some questions that needs to be answered. Why haven't there been any big demonstrations against Blago's arrest and impeachment trial? Why haven't there been any buzz in the blogosphere and the news media calling for the Illinois Senate and Patrick Fitzgerald to back off of Blago? Why haven't any entrepreneurs try to sell "Free Blago" buttons or t-shirts?

Blago loves to compare himself to Nelson Mandela but Mandela had demonstrators all over the world calling for his freedom during the years that he spent in a South African prison. So far, there have been no major movement to support Blago at all. Why is that?

Perhaps this video clip from CBS News provides a clue for this apparent apathy over the persecution of Blago.

Watch CBS Videos Online

That's right, 66 percent of respondents in a Chicago Sun-Times poll gives and "F" to the now former governor. Which goes to show that Blago has an inflated sense of self that has no basis in reality.

The Blago Trainwreck on the Media Prowl

The fact that Rod Blagojevich has said that he won't attend his own impeachment trial starting tomorrow hasn't stopped him from giving interviews like this one on this morning's Today Show Sunday on NBC where he compared his recent troubles to those of Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King.

By the way, Blago is going to be making appearances on two ABC daytime shows tomorrow: Good Morning America and The View. Will he spout some poetry or make some sort of analogy to a historical event or person? I can only hope! (Ha! Ha! Ha!)

Bye-Bye, O.J.

target="_new">http://news.bostonherald.com/track/celebrity/view/2008_12_06_O_J__Simpson_put_away_for_up_to_33_years/srvc=home&position=also

LAS VEGAS - A broken O.J. Simpson, headed for the slammer for 9 to 33 years for an armed hotel robbery and kidnapping, admitted to being “stupid” but insisted he meant no harm, while the relatives of his slain ex-wife Nicole Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman took comfort in his sentence.

The 61-year-old football Hall of Famer stood shackled and stone-faced as Judge Jackie Glass rattled off the punishment. Moments before, Simpson made a rambling, five-minute plea for leniency.

“I didn’t want to hurt any of these guys. I know these guys. These guys have eaten in my home. I’ve done book reports with their kids. I’ve sung to their mothers when they were sick,” Simpson said. “You know I wasn’t there to hurt anyone. I just wanted my personal things and I realize that was stupid of me. I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to steal anything from anybody and I didn’t know I was doing anything illegal.”

The notorious grid star had said he was simply trying to retrieve sports memorabilia and items such as his first wife’s wedding ring from two dealers when he stormed a Las Vegas hotel room on Sept. 13, 2007.

Glass said her sentence had nothing to do with Simpson’s 1995 acquittal in the slaying of his ex-wife and Goldman.

“I’m not here to try and cause any retribution or any payback for anything else,” Glass said. But she noted O.J.’s cockamamie scheme led to a violent confrontation in which at least one gun was drawn, and someone could have been shot. Simpson could serve up to 33 years but is eligible for parole in nine years, the judge’s clerk said.

Simpson was immediately led away as Glass refused to let him go free on bail while he appeals. Co-defendant and former golfing buddy Clarence “C.J.” Stewart was sentenced to at least 15 years.

Ron Goldman’s father, Fred Goldman, said, “We are thrilled, and it’s a bittersweet moment. It was satisfying seeing him in shackles like he belongs.”

The Goldmans took a measure of credit, saying their relentless pursuit of O.J.’s assets to satisfy a $33.5 million wrongful-death judgment “pushed him over the edge.”

I normally don't bother with sports starts turned celebrities but this story is pretty sad and tragic, no matter how you feel about O.J. Simpson. Here was someone who had it all (in terms of wealth, fame, public adoration, and power) and he casually chucked it all away because he couldn't control his destructive impulses. I was too young to fully remember his career as a football star but I do remember the years when he was a celebrity when he made ads touting a rental car company, made guest appearances on numerous TV shows, served as a sports commentator, and even acted in a few films--the best of which were the three Naked Gun movies where he was pretty hilarious as the detective who kept on getting injured on the job.

In public he projected himself as this easy-going guy capable of some self-deprecating humor, which made him into a lovable celebrity. This is why I was so shocked when the Los Angeles police found a bloody glove in his yard so soon after his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman were found brutally murdered in her home.

In the years since his murder trial (which he was acquitted), the civil lawsuit filed by the Brown and Goldman families (which resulted in a $33 million judgement against O.J.), and now this armed robbery trial, I've gotten over the idea of O.J. being a nice goofy guy. There's nothing about this man that shocks me anymore.

I've long felt sorry for the two children O.J. had with his ex-wife. It's bad enough they had to spend the rest of their childhood without a mother while knowing the fact that she was brutally murdered. But it is definitely a heavier burden to know that their father has been accused of murdering their mother and he was held liable in her death in a civil court.

I'm glad that this new court case didn't produce the media hype like his murder trial did (when CNN broadcast his nine-month long trial on a daily basis). There were cameras in the Las Vegas courtroom but no cable news channel broadcasted it like a soap opera. I think it's because, unlike the 1990's murder trial, there are far more urgent issues that the U.S. is going through (like the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and the declining economy) than the trial of some celebrity being done in by his own arrogance.

The silver lining of this new jail sentence is that now that Simpson is in jail, there won't be any further attempts to offer him money based on his notoriety by shady sleazy people. (Remember book publisher Judith Reagan encouraging O.J. to write that If I Did It book where he "imagines" how he would have murdered Nicole Brown SImpson and Ron Goldman had he really done the murders that he has denied ever committing? She lost her job over that incident.)

I don't ever want to hear anything else from O.J. Simpson until the day he dies.

When Black Friday Lives Up to Its Name

I'm now convalescing at home after undergoing hip replacement surgery on my left hip. Due to my limited mobility, I pretty much missed out on the annual "Black Friday" tradition. Hell it's not much of a loss since I've grown disgusted with the way people have behaved on Black Friday for years in their narrow-minded singular quest to buy Christmas presents on the cheap regardless of whether the intended recipients would've wanted the items or not.

Well, these two stories have brought a new low for Black Friday.

The first is about a Wal-Mart worker who died under the most despicable circumstances.

http://www.nydailynews.com/ny_local/2008/11/28/2008-11-28_worker_dies_at_long_island_walmart_after.html

A Wal-Mart worker died early Friday after an "out-of-control" mob of frenzied shoppers smashed through the Long Island store's front doors and trampled him, police said.

The Black Friday stampede plunged the Valley Stream outlet into chaos, knocking several employees to the ground and sending others scurrying atop vending machines to avoid the horde.

When the madness ended, 34-year-old Jdimytai Damour was dead and four shoppers, including a woman eight months pregnant, were injured.

"He was bum-rushed by 200 people," said Wal-Mart worker Jimmy Overby, 43.
"They took the doors off the hinges. He was trampled and killed in front of me.
"They took me down, too ... I didn't know if I was going to live through it. I literally had to fight people off my back," Overby said.

Damour, a temporary maintenance worker from Jamaica, Queens, was gasping for air as shoppers continued to surge into the store after its 5 a.m. opening, witnesses said.

Even officers who arrived to perform CPR on the trampled worker were stepped on by wild-eyed shoppers streaming inside, a cop at the scene said.

"They pushed him down and walked all over him," Damour's sobbing sister, Danielle, 41, said. "How could these people do that?"

---------------------------------

"When they were saying they had to leave, that an employee got killed, people were yelling, 'I've been on line since Friday morning!'" Cribbs said. "They kept shopping."

--------------------------------

Items on sale at the Wal-Mart store included a $798 Samsung 50-inch Plasma HDTV, a Bissel Compact Upright Vacuum for $28 and Men's Wrangler Tough Jeans for $8.

The Long Island store reopened at 1 p.m. and was packed within minutes.

"I look at these people's faces and I keep thinking one of them could have stepped on him," said one employee. "How could you take a man's life to save $20 on a TV?

Think that story is bad enough? Well, here's another one that's equally despicable.

http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/lanow/2008/11/shots-were-fire.html

Shots rang out today inside a Toys R Us store in Palm Desert, killing two and causing shoppers at the busy store to scramble for cover.

Palm Desert Councilman Bob Spiegel told The Times that based on early reports, two rival groups shopping at the store had some kind of argument and then shots were fired. Two men were killed in the exchange of gunfire, he said.

Sara Frahm, 25, of La Quinta was shopping for electronic toys at the time of the shooting. She told The Times she heard two women fighting and swearing in an aisle next to her. She said employees went to break up the fight and that all of the sudden a number of people yelled, "He has a gun!" She said she heard six or seven shots.

Mike Stitt of Yucca Valley was shopping with his wife and two children when he saw two women fighting and calling each other names. Both were with men. One of the men pulled out a gun and shot it in the air, then shot the other man in the back, Stitt told The Times.

In a statement, Toys R Us stressed that the shooting appeared to stem from a "personal dispute."

There have been so many incidents between big box retailers, holiday shoppers, and Black Friday over the years that it was sadly inevitable that people would end up dying for no real good reason. I can remember back in the 1980's when the Cabbage Patch dolls were a big deal and I heard stories about people who were literally fighting in the aisles for these damned dolls. There were similar fights that arose in big box store shopping aisles during the years when Tickle Me Elmo and Furby were pronounced in the media as "Hot Toys" and people ended up being injured.

Now we have people who have died over Black Friday. What is it about Black Friday that makes adults act like animals in their quest to purchase stuff on the cheap, most of which will eventually end up gathering dust in basements or even in landfills once the holiday season ends? I'm no advanced well-credentialed college researcher (in fact, I have a Bachelor's degree) but I've managed to observe a few things about Black Friday.

First of all, for the last 10 years or so I've noticed an increase in the number of stores who announce that they would be opened at extremely early hours. (Such as Macy's, which announced that it would opened its doors on Black Friday at 4 a.m.) In order to entice people to rise up out of bed, they would have a limited number of consumer items that would be sold at their lowest prices so that people who wake up early would pay the lowest prices. The ads also say that if you don't arrive very early, you'll miss out on bargains.

I've noticed that the large department store chains (like Kohl's and Macy's) and big box retailers (like Wal-Mart and Best Buy) are the ones who engage in this practice. I've never heard of a small locally-owned mom-and-pop store doing this. Nor have I ever heard of smaller-sized retail stores (like GameStop or Claire's) doing this. It's the big stores who entice people to end their Thanksgiving festivities early so they can go into long lines in the cold and dark just so they can save money buying presents.

I also recognize that the reason why the big stores get away with this is because many shoppers have been acting like sheep and obeying the store's orders to come very early in the morning or else. These people have been seduced into believing that they have to put on the most perfect Christmas and if they can do it while not spending a lot of money, then it's all the better.

Basically it's the tyranny of the big stores who lord it over shoppers by dictating when they will lower prices. It doesn't help that there are far fewer stores than there used to be so the big stores can get away with forcing people to go into stores early in the morning in the quest to save money. When I was growing up, there used to be stores like Hecht's, Hutzlers, Hohschild Kohn's, Woodward & Lothrop's, and Garfinckle's--all of whom were local department stores who operated in the Baltimore-Washington area. As far as I can remember, none of them ever opened their doors on Black Friday earlier than 8 a.m. nor did they encourage shoppers to wait in lines overnight so they could be the first ones in the doors when they opened,

But starting in the 1980's, many of these stores I knew have disappeared either through mergers or bankruptcies and it's gotten to the point where there aren't as much variety and diversity in retail as there used to be. As a result, stores could act dictatorial towards shoppers by opening at insane hours and try to get away with it.

As a result you have a bunch of brainwashed shoppers who are so obsessed with buying presents for the lowest prices that they are willing to endure difficulty in finding parking, spending hours waiting in long lines for the doors to open at 4, 5, 6, or 7 a.m. just so they can find something cheap. These people endure so much degradation in their quest to save money that nothing else matters--including people's lives.

I know it's too late this year but next year we the people need to take a stand against the stores' manipulating the general public like this. Is buying a cheap television set or DVD player really worth getting up very early in the morning? In fact, I even question the quality of many of these early-morning sale items. How do I know that a certain MP3 player on sale for under $50 won't break a few months after the holidays end? How do I know that a certain child's toy on sale for under $20 won't be subjected to a recall a few months later because it has too much lead in it? Is that [name of consumer item made by a company I've never heard of before] is a quality item that will give me the most bang for my buck or is it some cheaply made junk that's doomed to end up in a landfill when it breaks a week after the three-month warranty expires?

Most importantly, is pursuing a cheap consumer item more important than a person's life?
